Swarms of stinging jellyfish are bombarding Mid-Atlantic coastlines, leaving beachgoers stung, hurting and packing up early. Biology professor Darrin Schultz tells WFMZ early heat and high salinity create a “boom” cycle for these species. He says other local conditions, including runoff, could also influence where the jellyfish stay in the water. Jellyfish can detect changes in their surroundings, including chemicals and salinity in the water, and respond to physical contact, he adds.
