Research Statement

The Herrera Lab of Deep-Sea Biology investigates the connections between ocean environmental variability and biodiversity over time and space. We apply high-throughput omics techniques, computationally intensive analytical tools, oceanographic field work, and laboratory experiments to study deep-sea ecosystems' past, present, and future. Our work informs the management of marine ecosystems vulnerable to environmental change and other threats. Our research is interdisciplinary; we work closely with physical oceanographers, geochemists, geologists, molecular biologists, marine engineers, and natural resource managers.

Biography

Santiago received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Biology and Microbiology from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia. During his master's work, he was a Graduate Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. Santiago earned his Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He was also a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto. In recognition of his contributions, Santiago has received an Early-Career Research Fellowship from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a Faculty Research Award from the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Frank Hook Professorship from Lehigh University.
